Teaching Philosophy

Most of my education has been very classical, and I have learned the basic principles of both the German and the French methods of training. I feel that each method has its strengths for different types of horses and riders. The foundation of my educational system is based on the correct centered position of the rider and the seat and aids in order to work with the horse instead of against them.

I try to create patient, thinking riders who understand what they are doing and why they are doing it. I encourage discussion and open dialog in all of my lesson and think that ALL questions are welcome ones.

I am an avid Yoga practitioner and a certified Hatha Yoga instructor. I believe that Yoga has helped my body heal from numerous old injuries and has improved my body and my awareness of my body for riding. As I continue to expand my yoga practice I am applying the yoga stretching, centering and breathing exercises to my horse training and especially to helping my students obtain a more effective position through a better understanding and connection with their bodies. Please contact me for my current Yoga class schedules and locations.

Dressage Horse Training

I believe that all horses benefit from dressage training, and that those with limitations in natural ability can still be correct and enjoyable dressage horses. Any horse's gaits will be improved through the methodical application of dressage principles.

The most important thing to me when training the horse is to proceed slowly and patiently, so that the horse understands the training and becomes comfortable with it. I don’t believe in the quick fix. I start young horses using a balance of ground work, lunging, long lining and riding.

I am accomplished at retraining and re-schooling horses that have been trained to perform some of the "tricks" without the correct basics of Relaxation, Rhythm, Suppleness, Straightness, and attention to the aids. The most important details when training any horse, from very green to very experienced, are the basics.
